Unplug at the Getaway House
IT’S TIME TO .. UNPLUG.
My husband Justin and I wanted to celebrate our first year anniversary by doing something special, by unplugging.
While we all get caught up in the world and being connected to everything, it was essential for us to have a fresh start to our second year of marriage. My husband works at a hospital and deals with people every day, and I work on social media! Going somewhere with minimal service made us feel as if we were in a dream.
READY TO ESCAPE?
If you are ever interested in a Getaway House, I'm here to help with preparing yourself for this trip. From what to expect and also what to bring.
WHERE CARE THE LOCATIONS?:
Where are the locations:
Atlanta
Austin + San Antonio
Boston
Charlotte + Raleigh
Chicago
Dallas
Houston (Navasota, TX)**
Los Angeles
Nashville
New York
Pittsburgh + Cleveland
Portland
Seattle
Washington, DC
** where we stayed
Each location is about an hour outside of the central city, giving you "peace." According to their website, a Getaway is "building balance into modern life — taking the time to rest and unplug from the daily hustle and to focus on ourselves, our relationships, and the wonder of nature."
All cabins are spaced out from other cabins and equipped with a comfortable queen bed with fresh linens and pillows. Depending on what cabin you pick, there are two queen beds (room for four). The view of the window is the best part!
The cabin is small but spacious. It has a bathroom to take a hot shower, toilet, heat, and air conditioning. There is also a kitchenette with everything you need, including a mini-fridge, two-burner stove, dishware, and cookware. The kitchenette also has a mini library with fun books. If you forget anything for food, there are items you can purchase. Want to unplug? There is a cell phone lockbox! Also, make sure to enjoy the outdoor fire pit. No need to go looking for firewood; you can purchase bundles of wood and a fire starter.
TAKE A QUICK TOUR OF OUR WEEKEND BELOW:
OUR STAY:
Day One:
We arrived on a Friday evening after work to start our anniversary celebration. We brought dinner; however, we didn't eat it. We packed ingredients for turkey spaghetti. We weren't too hungry, so we ate chips and salsa. We exchanged gifts, played board games, and enjoyed one another.
Day Two:
When we woke up, we walked Oliver on a small trail and made breakfast. We made pancakes from pancake mix, bacon, and turkey sausage. It was very filling and helped provide energy for our walk!
After breakfast, we went on a mile and a half walk in the woods. Getaway provides trails for their guest at their location and driving distance. Some trails were as far as an hour and as close as 30 minutes. The trail at the location was straightforward to follow, and we felt safe.
When we got back, we got refreshed, took the time to read, and napped until it was time to prepare dinner. For dinner, we utilized the outdoor firepit and grilled lamb chops, steak kabobs, and veggies. We made box macaroni and cheese on the stovetop. For dessert, we had s’mores and a slice of cake!
That night, we played more board games and watched Netflix (download them on your ipad) until we passed out.
Day Three:
When we woke up, we went on a nice walk again. We ended up eating a light breakfast with leftovers that we warmed up on the stove and then hit the road.
ITEMS I RECOMMEND TO BRING:
Bring yourself, your clothes, and your cooking supplies (meat, noodles, veggies, etc). The house has everything you need from pots and pans, salt and pepper, and utensils. If you are unsure, bring it just incase. I also recommend bringing bug spray for the trails. Bring drinking water if you are uncomfortable using their sink for drinking water also.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW:
1) IF YOU HAVE A DOG, BRING THEM:
For a fee, you can bring your fur friend with you. Our dog Oliver had such a great time just being with us. They provide dog bowls, treats, and towels for their feet. Super cute.
2) ALL YOUR CABIN INFORMATION IS SENT BEFORE YOUR ARRIVAL:
A little worried about how to get there? They will send you an email with all your information. Then they will text you with your cabin info, including the name and the code information to get in. Just like a hotel, check-in is at 3 PM, and checkout is at 11 AM.
3) ARE YOU ALONE IN THE WOODS? NOPE!
Think of the Getaway as a community/neighborhood. There are other people around you; however, they are not on the view site. You're not supposed to hear them either. You have enough space in between other cabins for privacy. Each cabin has a locked door!
4) DID YOU FORGET FOOD?
No worries. There is pasta noodles and sauce available for purchase. You can also purchase instant coffee and teas! Everything is less than $10.
It’s Time To Wrap It Up:
We are so thankful to “Getaway”. Being at peace and not worrying about anything has always been a goal. How sweet and romantic that we got a chance to come here and recharge for our anniversary. Overall, this trip was needed. Our rating? 10 out of 10. My husband and I are already talking about going back! It was just so peaceful and a chance to recharge.
